Vardges Sureniants (Armenian: Վարդգես Սուրենյանց; 27 February – 6 April ) was an Armenian painter, sculptor, illustrator, translator, art critic, and theater artist. He is considered the founder of Armenian historical painting.Surenyants created portraits of One hundred years ago today, on 6 April , Vardges Sureniants (–) died in the Crimean resort of Yalta. Little-known in western Europe and North America, he was the father of Armenian narrative art, and his paintings were much admired by Ilya Repin among others.
